Introduction
Kodagu, also called Coorg is a district of Karnataka state, India. Kodagu is said to be derived from the Kannada kudu, meaning steep or hilly. In Puranas, Kodagu is mentioned as krodha desa, meaing Land of Anger and the Kodavas (Coorgs) as Mleccha, meaning foreigners or barbarians. It is also believed that Kodagu is derived from the word Kodava -Kod meaning give and avva meaning mother, referring to river Kaveri. Kodagu lies in the Western Ghats of southwestern Karnataka, bordered by Dakshina Kannada district to the northwest, Hassan district to the north, Mysore district to the east, and Kannur district of Kerala state to the south and southwest. Coffee is grown extensively in the district.
The population in 2001 was 545,322, increasing 11.64% from 1991 to 2001, and 5.75% from 1981 to 1991. The capital of the district is Madikeri (also called Mercara), meaning place of the bees.
It’s a beautiful place with an abundance of blue-green mountain ranges, picturesque waterfalls, scenic landscape and prettily clad damsels, and it remains a very attractive and popular tourist destination throughout.
