Nilgiris

The Nilgiris or the Blue Mountains (in accurate translation) is an ancient massif in peninsular India. Lying between 11.8 and 11.37 and 76.27 and 77.4E, it covers an area of 2543 Km2 at the junction of the Western and Eastern Ghats. Presently forming part of the state of Tamilnadu, the administrative district of the Nilgiris is Ootacamund (Ooty) or Udhagamandalam, as it is officially called.

The Nilgiris District is in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Nilgiri is also the name given to a range of mountains spread across the states of Tamilnadu as well as Karnataka and Kerala. The Nilgiri Hills are part of a larger mountain chain known as the Western Ghats. The highest point is the mountain of Doddabetta, with a height of 2,637 m. The district is mainly contained within this mountain range.

The total population of the district according to latest official figures (2001) is 764,826, of which about one-third are natives or tribal and quasi-tribal inhabitants. The rest of the population mainly consist of a polyglot set of peoples migrating to the hills and naturalising themselves since the British opened up the district in the 1820s.
