Kozhikode

Kozhikode, formerly Calicut, the most important region of Malabar in yesteryears, plays a major role as a district of historical significance.Kozhikode, the place of monuments, was the capital of the powerful Zamorins and also a prominent trade and commerce centre. Kozhikode District found a place in the World History with the discovery of Sea Route to India in 1498 by the Portuguese Navigator Vasco Da Gama. Vasco Da Gama landed at the Kappad sea shore with three vessels and 170 men. A monument is constucted here in Kozhikode to commemorate the historical landing.

Fine Monuments

The Pazhassirajah Museum in Kozhikode is a monument that exhibits a huge collection of wood and metal sculptures, models of temples and reconstruction of megalithic monuments. The Art Gallery located adjacent to this museum is yet another place where history lies asleep. At the Kozhikode city centre is the large Manamchira Tank, flanked by the Town Hall and the Public Library, all of which are fine examples of traditional architecture of Kerala. The nearby Commonwealth Trust building is a 100 years old monument.
