Vaikom
Vaikom is one of the oldest towns in Kottayam district due to its involvement in the pre independence struggle.During the freedom struggle of India, Vaikom Satyagraham against untouchability started here in 1925 wherein Mahatma Gandhi took an active part.

Vaikom is located at a distance of 40 km from Kottayam town which is well connected to almost all the major cities of Kerala as well as to the rest of India by a number of routes of transportation.


Vaikom is famous for its paddy fields and coconut groves. Coconut and rice are the major crops and these have formed the backbone of Vaikom economy along with fishing. More recently spices like Nutmeg, Black Pepper etc have also caught the attention of Vaikom farmers. The place is also becoming a major tourist destination.

Kerala has made significant contributions in the field of vedic astrology by rendering "Prasna Marga", considered as the Bible of Horary astrology and “Aryabhatiya” by AryaBhatta, the 4 th century astrologer.
