Malappuram, one of the districts of Kerala, was formed in 1969. The geographical area of the district is 3,550 sq. km. It is the third largest district of Kerala, as it occupies 9.13 per cent of the total area of the state. The total population of Malappuram is 36,29,640 as per the census report of 2001. The number of males in the total population is 17,59,479 whereas the number of females in the district is 18,70,161. The population density of Malappuram is 1022 per square kilometer. Rich in cultural and political heritage, Malappuram is a district lying in Northern Kerala and bounded on the north by Wayanad District, on the northeast by Tamil Nadu, Thrissur District on the southwest and Palakkad District on the south and southeast.
The district is known for national activism such as the Kilafat Movement and the Malabar Rebellion, which struggled against feudalism and colonialism. Acknowledged by historians as part of Indian Independence Struggle, said movements are also said to be associated with religious overtones.
Literally meaning a land atop hills, Malappuram was part of the Malabar District in the Madras Presidency before the 1947 Indian Independence. The district is enriched with three great rivers namely the Chaliyar, the Kadalundi and the Bharathapuzzha. Presently, Malappuram District is comprised of 2 revenue divisions, 6 taluks, 135 villages, 14 blocks, 5 municipalities and 100 panchayats.
Panchayats are responsible for mother and child welfare, agricultural production, rural industry, medical relief, grazing grounds, local roads, water tanks and wells. Alongside historic moments and diverse natural attractions, Malappuram is also well-known for spectacular festivals held at its temples and mosques.
