 Kottayam is a main educational hub. According to the 1991 census, Kottayam District of Kerala is the first district to achieve full literacy rate in the whole of India. Education in Kottayam dates back to the year when the Malankara Orthodox Church was established, which was the first institution to start English education in the southern part of India. Education in Kottayam got a further boost with the establishment of the C.M.S High School, which was later renamed as the Church Missionary Society College High School. This school was established by Benjamin Bailey, who was a British missionary of the region.
Higher education in Kottayam got a major upward lift with the establishment of the C.M.S College in the year 1817 by the Church Missionary Society.
