 Kochi, one of the most important cities of Kerala, excels in literacy rate of the whole state. As far as preliminary education in Kochi is concerned, the schools here are affiliated to either Kerala State Education Board, Indian Certificate of Secondary Education or Central Board of Secondary Education. After clearing the primary hurdle, the students in Kochi have plenty of options for their higher studies. There are numerous colleges in Kochi, affiliated to Cochin University or Mahatma Gandhi University.
Many colleges of Kochi also offers technical courses. Some such colleges are Model Engineering College, Center of Excellence in Laser and Optoelectronic Sciences, Toc-H Public School, School of Communication and Management Studies.Choice school situated in Tripunithura is another leading “A” category school.
The central government has put special emphasis on uplifting the education in Kochi. Consequently, major institutions have been put up in Kochi making it a major educational hub. The Cochin University of Science and Technology, CUSAT (also known as Cochin University) is situated in the suburbs of the city. Most of the citys colleges offering tertiary education are affiliated to the Mahatma Gandhi University located at Kottayam.
Other national educational institutes in Kochi include the Central Institute of Fisheries Nautical and Engineering Training, the National University of Advanced Legal Studies, the National Institute of Oceanography, Central Institute of Fisheries Technology and the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute.The only College of Fisheries in the State is situated at Panangad, a suburban area of the city. The college comes under the Kerala Agricultural University.
