Headquarters of the district administration is at Malappuram with collectorate and main offices in the Civil Station, established in the erstwhile headquarters of the Territorial Army. The district has two Revenue Divisions with headquarters at Perintalmanna and Tirur.There are 6 Taluks that are divided into Revenue Firkas and 135 villages.Perintalmanna revenue division comprises of Ernad, Perintalmanna and Nilambur taluks and Tirur revenue division comprises of Tirur, Tirurangadi and Ponnani Taluks.

The district has a good network of libraries.
