 In the dense tropical evergreen and deciduous forests and grassland patches is located the Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary, an ideal eco tourism destination. Home to a microcosm of Indias bird population with about 500 winged species, the sanctuary was designed by Dr. Salim Ali, the renowned ornithologist.
This bird sanctuary at Thattekkad, a peninsular land of 25 sq. km is covered with deciduous forests and plantation of rosewood, teak etc and offers lots of scope for eco tourism activities in and around the place. Rare birds like the Crimson-Throated Barbet, Bee-eater, Sunbird, Shrike, Blackwinged Kite and the Night Heron are commonly sighted. This rare haven offers picturesque landscapes, and is a nature lovers paradise. Bombay Natural History Society has identified 253 species here. The rivers are rich in fishlife and are shallow for most of the year.

The eco tourism destination of Thattekad Bird Sanctuary is located at Latitude 76deg. 40-76 deg.45N and Longitude 10deg. 7-11 deg. E. The bird sanctuary is located in Kothamangalam Taluk of Ernakulam district on the northern banks of the Periyar river. At the height of 35-523m above the sea level, this marvellous bird sanctuary is situated at Njayqapilli peak. 13 km north east of Kothamangalam, Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary is home to some of the rarest species of birds in India.

Indian roller, cuckoo, common snipe, crow pheasant, jungle nightjar, kite, grey drongo, Malabar trogon, woodpeckeer, large pied wagtail, baya sparrow, grey jungle fowl, Indian hill myna, robin bird, jungle babbler and darter are some of the common birds found here. There are a few rare birds as well which include sunbird, shrike, fairy blue-bird, grey-headed fishing eagle, blackwinged kite etc.
