Introduction Akola is one of the leading industrial as well as agricultural districts of Maharashtra state.The city has a prominent industrial zone on the outskirts known as Akola MIDC Industrial Area. It also has the famed,Dr. Panjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapeeth, which attracts students from all over for its Agricultural and Industrial courses. The chief agricultural crops produced in the area are cotton, soyabean, jowar, wheat, sunflower, and peanut.The place also has a rich historical, cultural, and political background. In ancient times it constituted a very important province of the Vidharba kingdom. It was later an important stronghold of the Marathas. However, it was annexed by the British East India Company in 1803, in the Battle of Adgaon. Several historical forts and monuments are reminiscent of its glorious past under the Marathas. |
